The CSGNA is a special interest group representing primarily gastroenterology nurses from  across Canada.  The membership consists of nurses,  other health care professionals and health  care workers employed in the field of gastroenterology or a related field.

Gastroenterology nursing is a specialty practice area providing care to adults,  adolescents and  children, with known or suspected gastrointestinal disease or those at risk of developing  gastrointestinal disease requiring diagnostic,  screening,  therapeutic or palliative care.  Gastroenterology nurses can be found working in medical and surgical day units,  out-patient  clinics,  operating rooms, endoscopy units and  in-patient hospital units in all capacities  including management, clinical, education and research.

The CSGNA had its roots in Ontario starting as the Ontario Society of Gastrointestinal Assistants  in 1984.  In 1989 the  Society expanded to a National Society and the name was changed to the  Canadian Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates.
